30-year anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Wollongong and Kawasaki

The Sister City relationship between Wollongong (NSW) and Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture,Japan) was established in 1988. A welcome dinner was held at the Wollongong Art Gallery to celebratethe 30 year anniversary of this relationship, and botha delegation from Kawasaki and staff from CLAIR Sydney attended at the kind invitation of the Wollongong City Council.

The Mayor of Kawasaki City, Mr. Norihiko Fukuda, and a delegation from Kawasaki City toured local sites and enjoyed meeting and talking with W ollongong locals. During the dinner, the Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery warmly welcomed the Kawasaki City delegation, and Mayor Fukuda expressed gratitude for the kindness and hospitality extended by the people of Wollongong, and appreciation for the many people who have made positive contributions over 30 years to the sister city relationship.

Some art pictures that were drawn by Kawasaki City’s children and had been awarded the Kawasaki Culture prize winners were exhibited in the venue.
We hope the relationship between the two cities will conti nue to strengthen in the future.

  • To investigate environmental countermeasures, a student and her chaperone from Hikone Technological High School of Shiga Prefecture visited Australia from late July to early August. CLAIR Sydney conducted a briefing on 29 July about Australia’s culture and customs, and accompanied the group to a company visit in Brisbane on 31 July, where the company, known for producing products using a type of seaweed called Asparagopsis, shared insights into their research and production processes.

During the visit, they received information on efforts to reduce methane emissions from livestock using Asparagopsis, viewed from a carbon-neutral perspective. The student’s proactive participation in the meetings, driven by a desire to engage in environmental initiatives in the future, was impressive.

In addition to the briefing and accompaniment, we also reached out to the company to request a representative to discuss their Asparagopsis research. CLAIR Sydney will continue to support the activities of Japanese local governments conducting research on topics related to Australia.
