P3081241_resize When: Friday 8 March, 2019 1:00pm – 4:30pm Venue: NeW Space (The University of Newcastle) On 8 March, CLAIR Sydney held the 2019 CLAIR Forum in Newcastle in collaboration with the Institute for Public Policy and Governance at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS:IPPG). Newcastle prospered predominantly as an industrial city in the past, and is now flourishing anew as a popular tourist destination thanks to its stunning coastline and beautiful beaches. The city’s new identity as a popular tourist destination is reflected in the high ratings on travel guides and websites. This year’s theme was “Tourism Policies”. Mr Glenn Caldwell, General Manager of Destination Sydney Surrounds North; Ms Carol Mills, Director of UTS: IPPG; and three of our staff members presented on different initiatives and policies related to this theme. Many of the attendees engaged in the lively group discussion after the presentations. Thank you to all the attendees for coming to the CLAIR Forum. We will continue sharing knowledge with local governments, universities, and related organisations in Australia and New Zealand. The presentations on the day were as follows. 1. International Strategy for the Region – Mr Glenn Caldwell, General Manager, Destination Sydney Surrounds North 2. Rethinking “Rural”: Ecotourism, Cultural Conservation and Co-design – Ms Sarah Laverty, Research & Liaison Officer, CLAIR Sydney 3. The Yosakoi Network – Mr Takanori Tanimoto, Assistant Director, CLAIR Sydney 4. Water Tourism in Tokyo – Mr Yusuke Sasaki, Assistant Director, CLAIR Sydney 5. Tourism and Opportunities – Ms Carol Mills, Director, UTS:IPPG

  • To investigate environmental countermeasures, a student and her chaperone from Hikone Technological High School of Shiga Prefecture visited Australia from late July to early August. CLAIR Sydney conducted a briefing on 29 July about Australia’s culture and customs, and accompanied the group to a company visit in Brisbane on 31 July, where the company, known for producing products using a type of seaweed called Asparagopsis, shared insights into their research and production processes.

During the visit, they received information on efforts to reduce methane emissions from livestock using Asparagopsis, viewed from a carbon-neutral perspective. The student’s proactive participation in the meetings, driven by a desire to engage in environmental initiatives in the future, was impressive.

In addition to the briefing and accompaniment, we also reached out to the company to request a representative to discuss their Asparagopsis research. CLAIR Sydney will continue to support the activities of Japanese local governments conducting research on topics related to Australia.
