Local Government New South Wales Annual Conference (LGNSW) 2014

From 19–21 October, we attended the LGNSW Annual Conference in Coffs Harbour, NSW. We promoted CLAIR’s activities including this year’s CLAIR Forum, Japanese tourism and sister city relationships between NSW and Japanese local government areas. We met with many familiar faces and made a host of new contacts at our exhibition booth and during Conference events.

This conference was an excellent opportunity for us to see the common challenges between Australia and Japan, such as council amalgamations and assistance grant freezes, even though the Australian economy is in a much better state than Japan’s.

Of course, CLAIR is always glad to offer information on the Japanese local government system at Australian and New Zealand local government events.

We were very happy to talk to all the people who stopped by our booth. We look forward to seeing our NSW local government friends again and working with them in the years to come on further strengthening Australia-Japan ties.

  • To investigate environmental countermeasures, a student and her chaperone from Hikone Technological High School of Shiga Prefecture visited Australia from late July to early August. CLAIR Sydney conducted a briefing on 29 July about Australia’s culture and customs, and accompanied the group to a company visit in Brisbane on 31 July, where the company, known for producing products using a type of seaweed called Asparagopsis, shared insights into their research and production processes.

During the visit, they received information on efforts to reduce methane emissions from livestock using Asparagopsis, viewed from a carbon-neutral perspective. The student’s proactive participation in the meetings, driven by a desire to engage in environmental initiatives in the future, was impressive.

In addition to the briefing and accompaniment, we also reached out to the company to request a representative to discuss their Asparagopsis research. CLAIR Sydney will continue to support the activities of Japanese local governments conducting research on topics related to Australia.
